The Eastern Hemlock is one of few trees that grows out of a nurse log.

A nurse log is a decaying trunk or fallen tree that provides a home for new plants to grow. It provides a safe haven and better nutrients than the forest floor.

By taking the nourishment it needs from the nurse log, the Hemlock teaches us how to value our needs.
