“Patriarchal religions are infamous for their taboos and prescriptions with regard to women and sex, most of them imagined and imposed by men.” (Hunt and Jung, 2009) Throughout your life what sexual restrictions have you encountered that were imagined or imposed by men? How did this restrictions effect you?
Most people think of sex as something individual and private about themselves instead of a topic for the boardroom and legislative chambers across the globe. What benefits could you see in moving conversations about sexual ethics out of the bedroom?
Has anyone ever told you that it’s “not polite” to talk about sex? If so, what effect did it have on you?
What harm could there be in viewing our sexual choices as purely private and individual expressions of our values that do not affect the common good?
If sex is not exclusively or necessarily for procreative purposes then what is sex for?
In what ways is your sexuality connected to beautiful and healthy forms of power, pleasure, and justice?
What makes for good sex? What makes sex good?
If “Sex is the language of the body oriented towards pleasure” (Robb, 1996) what does that mean to you and your pleasure?
If “Justice is ‘right relationship’ or shared ‘power in relation’ (Lebacqz, 1996) what does that mean to you and your pleasure?
Hunt and Jung (2009) state that ‘Just Good Sex’ is sex that is delightful, safe, responsible, and community enhancing. If this is so, which one of those four categories deserves your attention over this next month?
