Self-care is not selfish

“Why are you sitting? Isn’t there something you could be doing?”

My sweet mother was doing the best she could. She was simply a product of the culture and the pure amount of children she was raising. I was raised in a slightly chaotic household - one that was full of love, yet struggled with the value of self-care.

And here I am at almost 35, learning that when I ascribe to the view that self-care is selfish - I miss the opportunity to learn from stillness. The frightening, cruel, sometimes isolated, world of stillness.

It’s in this place where, if I choose, I can listen. It’s here where my timid intuition can speak in a whisper - and I just might hear it.

Self care is not selfish, even if you have others telling you it is.
